CHAPTER EIGHT

“Hey!” Tulia hurried out of the RV, having paused only to put her shoes on. Even in that short amount of time, the Hobbs had almost vanished in the thick woods. At her call, though, they turned around. She saw Martin’s politely puzzled expression turn to surprise as he saw her, and a wide smile broke out over his face.

“Well, isn’t this a coinky-dink?” he said, walking back toward her. “We were certain you’d left the state altogether yesterday.”

“What are you doing here?” Tulia asked, not in the mood for pleasantries. “Are you following me?”

Behind him, his wife frowned, and Paige scoffed. Travis looked up from his phone to frown at his sister. Martin just laughed.

“Don’t worry, I’m sure we’re all jumpy after what happened,” he said, half speaking to his family and half to her. “This is one of our favorite camping spots; we didn’t think anyone else would be here. Just goes to show it’s a small world, doesn’t it?”

“No, seriously,” Tulia said, crossing her arms. “Dave, the guy who owns this place, said someone called him looking for me, and then you show up. What the heck?”

“Maybe you’re following us,” Travis cut in. “Why would we want to follow you, weird lady?”

“Travis,” Sue said sharply. “Don’t be rude.” The look she gave Tulia was distrustful, though.

“Hey,” Martin said, leaning his walking stick against a tree. “Look, neither of us is following the other. There’s no reason to be so mistrusting. I can show you pictures of us here last year. We’ve come here a lot, and decided to spend the rest of our trip here after what happened at Smokey’s. It’s quiet and peaceful, and none of us felt like being around strangers after what happened to that poor man.” He took his phone out and scrolled through it for a second before holding it out to Tulia. She hesitated, then took it. On the screen were pictures from the summer before of their family standing at the very trailhead they were at now.

“We were always going to come here at some point this year,” he assured her, taking the phone back. “It’s nice and secluded. I’m guessing that’s why you chose it too?”

She hesitated, then nodded. “I’m sorry.” She addressed all of them. “It’s been a weird week. Heck, it’s been a weird few months.”

“The whole state’s on edge with news of that serial killer,” Sue added at last, finally seeming to warm up a bit. “Knowing that he’s in the area…” She trailed off, shuddering. “To be honest, we thought about just going home. But this is our last summer before Paige moves away, and we didn’t want to give up just yet.”

“Or her,” Paige muttered. At the questioning looks she got, she flushed. “Mom’s just assuming that the serial killer is a guy. It could be a woman, too.”

“What do you know about it?” Travis asked. “You barely even paid attention to the news until he killed that guy you kept flirting with. Chances are it is a guy.
